Poem of Life

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the lord

Betty Jean "Kellam" Harrison

1941-2015

Betty Jean Kellam Harrison, 74, of Littleton NC, went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2015 after a brief illness.   Born February 23, 1941, in Fredericksburg VA, she was the daughter of Elizabeth and Walter Kellam.   Betty was a 1961 graduate of Greensville County High School and later attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, VA.  She was a devoted and well-loved employee of Greensville Memorial Hospital for over 35 years and later enjoyed her retirement living on Lake Gaston.   Betty was known for her strength and her beauty and was crowned Miss Emporia of 1961.   She had unending love for her family and was the greatest wife, mother, and grandmother that a family could ever hope for.   She was a wonderful cook and loved preparing meals for her family during holidays and visits.   Her special ingredient was love, which always made everything she cooked taste that much better.   She also took great pride in her home and was a gifted decorator who put her signature touches on everything inside her home and loved working in the flowers in her yard.   Betty was the most nurturing and supportive mother and grandmother and no family was more blessed to have that love for what seems like a far too brief period of time.   This love extended to her pets and she treasured each one of her beagles throughout the years and cherished them as though they were another one of her children.   She is survived by her soulmate and husband of 52 years Clyde Harrison, of Littleton NC; her son Chris Harrison and his wife Karen of Mechanicsville, VA; her grandchildren Conner Harrison and Kaitlyn Harrison of Mechanicsville, VA; her brother Marvin Kellam and his wife Theresa of Powhatan; her brother Wayne Kellam of Fredericksburg, VA and her beloved beagle Dixie.   She will be forever missed but never forgotten.   Her family will receive friends at 5pm Tuesday, May 5 th, at Owen Funeral Home, 303 South Halifax Road, Jarratt, VA 23867, where a memorial service will follow at6pm.   Private interment will be at Grace Anglican Church at a later date, where she was a lifetime member.   Online condolences may be directed to www.owenfh.com

Anne "Teensie"Vaneeta Hamilton
1952-2014

Anne V. Hamilton, Maryland native, resident of Arlington, Virginia, and graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, passed away unexpectedly at GW Hospital, Washington, DC on October 11, 2014, aged only 62. Anne, who had not been sick a full day in her life, became ill just two weeks before. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she was not in pain and died peacefully.

Anne was so many things ''' loyal best friend to scores of people; businesswoman (her company, Oliver & Hamilton, provided financial services to the Export-Import Bank and other federal agencies for many years); garden designer extraordinaire (for all four seasons!); decorator (with a unique style all her own); enthusiastic and knowledgeable real estate agent, with a recent side line fabricating funky hats and decorative canteens (just for fun); dedicated community volunteer; much loved student mentor; and ardent supporter of just causes.

Anne was also a crossword puzzle expert (of both the London Times and the NY Times, which she could polish off in no time at all); an ace Scrabble player; trusted supporter and staunch defender of her friends; serial party-giver, organizer of memorable games, and celebrant of all holidays; karaoke singer (her only flaw); godmother (the world's best); constant traveler with particular fondness for England and Thailand; very important Mensa member and surely always the smartest kid in any class; lover of books (which she devoured, always recycling to share with her friends); champion of all things Arlingtonian; wearer of the most striking earrings, often color matched to her permanently perfectly manicured nails and the brightest of lipsticks; general knowledge genius and history buff; Coronation plate collector; perfect travel companion; flamboyant Christmas present wrapper and habitual sender of the funniest Christmas cards (usually featuring Anne!); and someone, setting an example for all of us, who loved life and lived it to the full with no regrets.

On top of these attributes, Anne was fiercely independent; awash in integrity; an enemy of prejudice, closed-mindedness, cruelty, and injustice; honest and direct; irreverent(sometimes scarily so); happily unpredictable; endlessly curious; super, super smart; darned funny and fun to be around; completely lacking in pretension or animus; possessed of uncanny X-ray-like empathy; a happiness maker (she filled buckets, she didn't empty them); a ceaseless giver of her time and energy to others expecting nothing in return; always brave (to the very end); and someone whose personality truly did fill the room.

Most of all, Anne was simply the kindest, most generous person you could ever meet. A kindness you could always see in her truly beautiful, beautiful blue eyes. She made an indelible imprint on everyone she met. In the best possible way. We love you Anne. We will never stop missing you.

Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Celebration/Tribute Party honoring Anne on Sunday, October 26, starting at 6 pm and going to 9 pm, at the Arlington Arts Center 3550 Wilson Blvd, Arlington (of course) VA 22201

Frances "Traylor" Rae
1926-2008

LANEXA - Mrs. Frances Marion Traylor Rae was born December 9, 1926 and left us Thursday afternoon, August 7, 2008, at the age of 81. She passed quietly from this earthly world to her heavenly reward while in the home of her care-giving daughter. While we certainly will grieve and mourn our loss, it is not loss, but a gain to "Nana" as she leaves a broken body behind for a new glorious body and to live eternally in one of the "many rooms" with Jesus which He promised for those who accept Him and salvation.

Miss Frances Traylor met Mr. Floyd Rae while living at Jackson Field Home in Greensville County, Va. Floyd wooed Frances and their love grew to become a union of husband and wife and brought forth a home God blessed with five children; Gary, Debbie, Cheryl, Scott and Kelly. Frances was a devoted wife and nurturing mother. Her children will always remember her working or cooking while humming hymns, keeping an immaculate yard as well as reciting a wide variety of nursery rhymes, stories and songs for their enjoyment. Frances had two sisters, Ardella "Della" Andrews, who passed in 2007, and Kathleen "Kitty" Hall living in Florida.

Frances spent this past year in the loving care of her daughter in the home of Rick and Kelly R. May and family.
Garnett Floyd Rae Sr. and their eldest son, GF "Gary" Rae Jr. preceded her in death in 2007.

Her children Debbie Rae, Cheryl R. Caldwell, Scott Rae, Kelly R. May and their spouses along with "Nana's" 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren will sorely miss her, but they celebrated her life as they gather to greet friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, Va., with a memorial service beginning at 7 p.m. A second memorial service and internment took place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Aberdour Presbyterian Church, Jarratt, Greensville County., Va.

William "Billy" Meade Feild
1886-1953

Age 66, in the 67th year of his age, a leader in the social life of Norfolk for more than three decades, died at a Norfolk hospital Thursday, February 12, 1953 after a protracted illness.  A member of a distinguished Virginia family, he was associated with a Norfolk cotton firm during the years when Front Street was headquarters for one of the country's busiest cotton exchanges. More recently, BILLY FEILD, as hundreds of Norfolk debutantes knew him, had been connected with Burrow-Martin and Company, a Norfolk drug chain.  He was a descendant of the Rev Dr. WILLIAM MEADE, bishop of the Episcopal Church's Southern Diocese of Virginia, which now supports the Jackson Feild Home for Girls on the family estate near Jarrett where he was born. The FEILDs came to Norfolk when he was still quite young.  His father, a dentist who practiced in Portsmouth, died when his only son was 8 years old.  At one time, vice president and for years a board member of the Norfolk German Club, he introduced a debutante society almost annually for as long as he was connected with the club.  He was active in the affairs of the Norfolk Country Club and took part in several patriotic organizations.  He suffered from asthma for years, an ailment which gradually developed into a more serious respiratory trouble.  In poor health for the last several years, he had been confined to his hospital room since August.  Surviving are his mother, Mrs. MARY E. CAPEHART; a half brother, EDWARD E. CAPEHART and a sister, Miss ANNIE W. FEILD, all of Norfolk and a second sister, Mrs. WILLIAM G. ELLIS of Toledo, Ohio.  The Rev MOULTRIE GUERRY, rector of St Paul’s Episcopal Church, of which he was a member, will conduct funeral services at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts Saturday, February 14, 1953 at 3:30 pm.  Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.  Pallbearers: ROBERT B. EWALD, JOHN H. CURTIS SR, W. LUDELL BALDWIN and JOHN COLE.

The Rev. William N. Jackson
1809-1855

30-5th Alley West Elmwood, 3rd from South Line, West Row

In memory of Rev. William M. Jackson

Born in Baltimore, Md., October 10, 1809
Died in Norfolk, Va., October 5, 1855

Falling amidst the horrors of an unprecedented pestilence, he was indefatigable
in ministering to the sick, comforting the distressed and encouraging the dying
and burying the dead. He was faithful in all the relations of life and
died a martyr to his zeal in his Master's cause. True religion undefiled
before God and the Father in this to visit the fatherless and
widowed in their affliction and to keep himself unspotted from the
world. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea,
saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their
works do follow them.
